Kitchens: The Heart of the Log Home

by Jenn on February 12, 2008

Depending on the floor plan, you may have an eat-in kitchen where the dining table is in the kitchen or a separate dining room.  We’re going to look at open spaces where the dining occurs in the heart of the log home, the kitchen.

Log home kitchens hold many opportunities to bring in wood accents, bring the outdoors in, and embrace rustic beauty.  However, it’s not impossible to introduce modern elements into these designs for those who like that polished look.

RUSTIC CHARM: Design the kitchen with open beams, introducing stone and wood architectural elements wherever possible.  Oak cabinetry, slate countertops, stone flooring, and tongue and groove walls finish the construction.  Bring in a chandelier created from antlers or wood elements for above the dining table.  If space permits, add a fireplace or wood stove.

MODERN EDGES: Bring in granite features, such as countertops and backsplashes, for polish.  Use stainless steel appliances with black accents for shine.  Introduce hardwood flooring (or faux laminate depending on traffic, maintenance concerns, and cost) for a sleek and clean flow.  Add recessed lighting above task areas and under the cabinets.  Rather than bringing tongue and groove wall treatments throughout the room, consider one accent wall.

Mixing modern edges with rustic charm isn’t impossible, so the best of both worlds can be met.  If you’re dealing with a family coming from different tastes, it is possible to appeal to all them without it looking like a jumbled mess.  Be aware not to add too much, or it will look thrown together.

Warm Floors for your log home

by David on January 8, 2008

Over on our new Kitchen Design Journal we touched briefly on warm and cozy kitchen floors.

In a log home it’s especially nice to wake up turn on the gas fireplace and walk into a warm and cozy kitchen and have a nice cup of coffee as the snow is drifting around outside the door. I know this is what I envision as a perfect January morning in my future log home.

The great thing about floor radiant heat is that it’s not too expensive and you can isolate it to one or two rooms. Such as an office and the kitchen area or bathrooms. Which allows for better energy efficiency. Back to more planning on my dream home….

5 Ways To Save Money On Log Home Kitchen Cabinets

by David on November 2, 2007

high quality kitchen cabinets

I found this quick list over at Log Homes Design:

1: Choose oak or hickory instead of maple or cherry. More common wood types typically equal a lower price tag.

2: Pick a simple door and drawer style over an elaborate design. Instead, spend your money on storage features (think roll-out shelves) that will make your kitchen more efficient.

3: Choose a standard stain or finish. Paints, glazes, antiquing and distressing cost more.

4: Opt for fewer cabinets in larger sizes. Even though they may be smaller, incorporating more cabinets will be more expensive.

5: Go with standard overlay doors and hinges, rather than full-overlay cabinets (where the hinges are concealed).

High quality kitchen cabinets can truly be the difference between a good kitchen and a great one. Also, consider this: the expense is something that gets offset over time, primarily because houses with higher quality hardware tend to sell faster and for more money.
