Cemex is a leading supplier of building materials in the world. It is also the third largest cement producer in the world. This company was established in Mexico in 1906. The home base of this company is in Moterrey, Mexico. This company operates throughout the world. It has production facilities in 50 countries in North America, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. One-third of the operations is from Mexico, a quarter is from US plants, 15% is from Spain, and the rest is from the plants around the world.
Cemex is not only famous for being one of the largest cement producers in the world but also for the social actions. This company has developed some educational and social responsibilities. It instituted Premio Cemex which is an annual award for works in sustainability, accessibility, construction and architecture fields. Cemex also gives funding to Catedra Blanca which is an honors architecture course in three universities including ITESM, Universidad Iberoamericana, and the Barcelona School of Architecture. There are many other programs they give for the education and social responsibility initiatives.
Although Cemex has many good records in the education and social aspects, it has some records for environmental responsibility. Cemex air quality is the main problem for the environment. This company has been accused of violating environmental laws in the United States. The US Environmental Protection Agency gave file suit to this company for being responsible for violations of the Clean Air Act in Lyons, Colorado. This company also received file suit for failing in installing modern air pollution controls in Victorville, California. Not only in the United States, Cemex also charged £400,000 on October 2006 after the hazardous dust exploded up to three miles away from the Rugby works in the United Kingdom. It was the highest amount of fine given by Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control regulation. However, the Court of Appeal reduced the number to £50,000.
