A Modern Twist To The Tree House
I’m all for the outdoors lifestyle. A nice A-Frame cabin down by the river complete with the huge back deck that you can practically fish off of. A hammock tied to a couple of trees that have been around long before the area was first inhabited. A hand made pier that stretches out over the water. Maybe a bass boat and a jet ski tied up for the kids. Something simple, practical, and made from the trees that surround it. But how close to nature am I willing to get?
Take a look at this Swedish cabin that incorporates living trees into its design. By incorporates I mean, “A tree is growing through the middle of it”. Now it’s not such an intrusion (or maybe you see it as a unique asset) as others I’ve come across, but it’s still something to consider. Is building your log home around a full grow oak tree a unique idea or just plain weird? Let’s play Pro’s Vs. Cons!!
Pro
- The 100 year old tree you were going to cut down gets a reprieve
- You can live life a little easier knowing you are doing your part for the environment.
- Certainly it will add a touch of coolness and character to your home
- Imagine the tree growing branches inside your house. I’m not sure this could happen, but still it would be really neat.
- A reduced utility bill since your home will have it’s own shade.
Con
- What about bugs? What’s to stop a bed of ants or termites from building their home at the base of the tree and crawling up into the house?
- What happens if the tree gets a disease and dies? How do you get it out? And what do you do about the giant hole running through the center of your home?
- Surely there’s all this insulation and weather stripping around where the tree intersects the house, but still what about rain. The bottom drops out, water runs down the tree…doesn’t at least some of it get inside?
Like a trip to grandmas the idea of a tree growing in the middle of your home is a nice idea to visit, but does anybody really wanna live there?
